Freenas Virtio Drivers

суббота 11 мая admin 28

I am currently running FreeNAS as a VirtualBox guest under linux (openSUSE 12.2 x64). It all works correctly, but overall performance is somewhat below par. I understand that VirtualBox does not provide Guest Additions for freeBSD guests, but the kvm virtio framework is available from I tested virtio-net on a nas4free testbed (freeBSD 9.1) and it seems to be working fine. Has anyone tried installing it on FreeNAS 8.3.x and if so, how did you do it (it being nanoBSD based)? I would imagine running FreeNAS as a VM guest under a Linux host is quite a common scenario, so maximising its efficiency in this case should be a reasonable aspiration.

Mar 09, 2018  Even if I left Windows idling at the desktop, eventually it would just crash. I did try to install all of the VirtIO drivers, but it would still crash no matter what. Then I tried in FreeNAS 11.1-U1 and Windows 7/8/10 would just freeze during the installation at various percentages or steps.

Is there any likelihood that the virtio drivers would be included by default in upcoming versions? Any thoughts? Drommy PS: To avoid any flames on running FreeNAS as a VM guest rather than host, my linux workstation runs heavy BOINC CPU and GPU workloads on a 24/7 basis, while FreeNAS provides backup and media services to the network on dedicated drives. It's bullet-proof, just somewhat slow at time machine backups. I am fighting this at the moment aswell. Not sure if this has been fixed.

NAS4Free does work with virtio as well on a KVM environment. FreeNAS 8.3.1 also work with virtio as long as you do not use the virtio network (vtnet) device. Which is a pity as this is where I hope to see a performance increase. The drives have direct access to hardware as I use the Vt-d extension, therefore virtio for the data storage play no part. I just stumble on a TRAC ticket to FreeNAS 8.3.1 that may address this issue.

The virtio can be set with the FreeNAS web gui. I had to manually fiddle with the network device on the KVM side to make it work.

I just did a clean install of 11.2 after running 9.2 for the longest time. Looked like my flash boot drive stopped being able to be mounted with write capabilities, so I figured a fresh start was in order. Saved my config, did the install, uploaded the config, everything is working fine.

My original jail didn't get ported (obviously), but I also can't see it in the legacy interface, so I figured I'd virtualize one of my last-standing Windows 10 PC before replacing that. Downloaded the install ISO, set up the virtual machine, extracted the key from the physical machine and installed Everything went pretty ok. I accidentally rebooted the VM while it was still installing, but other than that it was easy.

The only problem is that a few minutes after booting, it locks up entirely. Nothing with unfreeze it except turning it off and on again. I looked for FreeNAS-specific drivers, but couldn't find anything.

Is there something wrong with my setup? I've allocated 8GB RAM, not over committing (host has 32GB available), should be plenty spare CPU to go around. I'm not at the computer right now, but I can get logs or whatever might help with troubleshooting. Thanks for any help! Haha as expected!! I hear you though, I still have my ESXi but I’d love to have my freenas take over some of the windows servers. Honestly I just want it implemented safely, I hope it’s doable sooner than later but can’t complain if it isn’t.
